Chapter 273: The Guild in Chaos: What Is Happening?!
As they made their way through the bustling streets toward the Adventurer’s Guild, Johnn quickly bounced back, practically vibrating with excitement. To him, this wasn’t just a successful A rank Quest. It was a literal miracle. A legendary rumor that had existed only in tavern tales, something no seasoned veteran had ever proven or achieved, and they had just pulled it off.
"I still can’t believe it, Maddy," Johnn said, looking up at the sky, his eyes wide with lingering awe. "We actually found the Special Bloom. We proved the stories right. No one else could do it, but we did."
Maddy listened to his eager chatter, keeping her gaze fixed on the road ahead. Inside her mind, the reality was entirely different.
"Because it was a lie," she thought. "A beautiful, perfectly orchestrated fabrication."
She had woven that flower out of her own raw magic, using the very powers the world feared. Yet, looking back at the girl’s rosy cheeks, Maddy felt no regret.
"But... It wasn’t wrong to use a "monster’s" magic to resurrect someone if it meant keeping a life from fading. It was simply what needed to be done."
The innkeeper’s despair had struck a chord she hadn’t expected. The family had been genuinely kind to her, a rare trait in this harsh land. Ever since Hoppy’s death, Maddy had begun to realize a complicated truth: not every Promethean was a sworn enemy. Some of them were just fragile, desperate creatures trying to protect the ones they loved.
She glanced sideways at Johnn. He was still gesturing wildly, recounting how the light had filled the room, completely oblivious to the entity walking right beside him. He was safe, the girl was alive, and his childhood scar had finally begun to heal.
For a brief, fleeting second, the sharp lines of Maddy’s cold expression softened. A small, genuine smile touched her lips as she watched him chat endlessly.

"Wait a minute..." Johnn suddenly stopped walking, his eyes widening as he stared at her face. "Did you just... smile?"
Maddy’s face instantly froze. The tiny grin vanished so fast it was as if it had never existed, replaced immediately by her signature blank stare.
"No. Your eyes are playing tricks on you."
"No way! I definitely saw it!"
Johnn began to pace around her, a massive, triumphant smirk spreading across his face. He leaned in, pointing a finger dramatically.
"The stoic, terrifying Maddy actually smiled! To me! I thought your face only had three settings: shouting, angry, and completely annoyed by my existence. This is a historic day!"
"If you don’t lower your voice, the next setting will be violent," Maddy threatened coldly, picking up her pace to leave him behind.
"Oh, come on, don’t be like that!"
Johnn laughed, easily catching up to her side and jogging backward in front of her.
"It’s fine to admit it! You’re happy because we’re heroes! You’re happy because of my incredible Whistle Strike and Dual Strike Cross combo! Come on, give me one more smile for the road!"
"I am currently smiling on the inside while imagining you getting eaten by another giant creeper," she replied flatly, keeping her eyes fixed forward.
"Hey, that’s harsh! But I know the truth now," Johnn teased, nudging her shoulder playfully, completely unfazed by her icy glare. "Underneath that scary outer shell, you’ve actually got a heart."
Maddy simply rolled her eyes, her pace never slackening.
"Of course I have a heart. I am human, after all."
Johnn let out a loud snort, shaking his head.
"Oh, of course you are! I mean, looking at your face right now, you are far more scarier than the Demon Lord—"
"—DEMON LORD!"
Johnn’s voice was instantly swallowed by a roaring shout from inside the building, echoing the exact same words.
"I knew it!" another voice yelled frantically from within. "The reports were true!"
Johnn froze on the steps, his teasing smirk completely vanishing. He tilted his head, his ears twitching as the muffled sound of a massive commotion bled through the heavy wooden doors of the establishment. The usual rowdy chatter of the midday crowd had been replaced by a tense, feverish shouting match.
"What in the world...?" Johnn muttered, his curiosity instantly piqued. "What kind of ruckus is happening in there?"
Maddy’s eyes narrowed, her senses instantly sharpening as she felt the spike of mana coming from the hall. Without waiting for Johnn, she pushed the heavy doors open, and both of them stepped inside to see what had the entire Guild in an absolute frenzy.
Inside, the usual layout of tables and chairs had been completely pushed aside. The adventurers, receptionists, and even the high-ranking local veterans were gathered in a massive, dense circle right in the center of the main hall, completely encircling someone—or something—hidden from view. The air was thick with shouting, gasping, and the overlapping murmurs of a panicked crowd.
"Hey, what gives?" Johnn muttered, puffing out his chest with a mix of confusion and slight disappointment. "I thought everybody would be waiting at the doors and shouting for us when I came home. Who else could they possibly be doing this for?"
Determined to get to the bottom of the mystery, Johnn reached back and firmly grabbed Maddy’s hand.
"Come on, let’s see what the big deal is. Don’t lose me in here."
Maddy blinked at her hand, slightly annoyed by the sudden contact, but allowed him to pull her forward. With his broad shoulders, Johnn easily began to wedge a path through the tight wall of onlookers, using his strength to part the crowd while keeping a secure grip on Maddy to make sure she was pulled right along to see it too.
As they broke through the inner ring of the circle, the shouting grew deafening, and the true source of the Guild’s madness finally came into full view.
