Chapter 202: Overwhelmed
Chapter 202: Overwhelmed
"What exactly can be done with Spark, Veronica?"
Kyle remembered asking her that question once, back when she had shown him the true manifestation of Genesis.
Veronica hummed and looked up from her phone before giving a casual shrug.
"A lot of things. But those with genuine experience, the ones who truly deserve the title of Special Grade, can achieve something beyond what most people are capable of."
Kyle raised an eyebrow.
"And that is?"
Veronica’s expression darkened slightly.
"Soul Manifestation."
...
Their surroundings shifted.
Kyle could immediately tell it wasn’t an illusion.
This wasn’t some trick of the senses.
It genuinely felt as though they had been transported somewhere else.
The place resembled a cave. A rocky ceiling stretched overhead, while the surrounding walls curved inward in a circular formation rather than standing flat.
It looked as though something enormous and spherical had burrowed through the earth, leaving behind this massive hollow space.
Kyle glanced around.
Veronica remained where she stood.
So did the assailant.
The difference was that the man’s demeanor had changed completely.
The confidence he had lacked moments ago now radiated from him.
"Looks like you weren’t expecting this from me." He grinned lazily as he leaned against the wall. "That kind of hurts."
The same man who had been desperately looking for an escape just moments earlier had completely abandoned that idea.
Now, he intended to finish the job.
And kill this bitch while he was at it.
Veronica took a slow breath.
The first thing she did was check on Kyle.
He was still kneeling where he had been before, seemingly unconcerned by the sudden change in surroundings.
"That artifact of yours looks valuable." The man’s brow twitched in annoyance. "It can resist my Field, huh?"
Veronica understood his frustration.
Inside a Field, especially one of this nature, even breathing became a challenge.
With every inhale, she could feel the toxins entering her body.
Fortunately, it wasn’t enough to seriously threaten her.
And with the artifact floating above Kyle, she was confident he would remain protected as well.
"You’ve got quite the nerve expanding your territory here, in the middle of Montclair." Veronica removed her jacket and held it in her hand. "Do you really think you’ll get away with this?"
Sweat covered her forehead, and her complexion had grown noticeably paler.
The man seemed genuinely surprised that she was still standing.
After all, this very place had killed seven First-Grade warriors within seconds.
Then again, Veronica wasn’t just another warrior.
She was the Sentinel of the East.
"You still don’t understand the authority we possess, miss." He smiled. "Even if you capture me and hand me over to the Central Administration, the League would have me liberated within a day."
Shaking his head, he continued,
"You people are bound by laws."
His grin widened.
"While I..."
A dangerous glint appeared in his eyes.
"I am free to do whatever I want."
Veronica hummed.
"But the real question is whether I’d hand you over to the authorities in the first place."
The assailant’s eyes narrowed.
"What do you mean?"
Holding her jacket, Veronica stepped back and made her way toward Kyle.
"Don’t you know?" she asked casually. "A Genesis Field is a completely separate dimension. Laws don’t reach here."
She crouched behind Kyle and gently draped the jacket over his head, covering his eyes. Then she looked past his shoulder at the assailant.
A dangerous glint flickered in her eyes.
"Whatever I do in here..." she said softly, "...I won’t be held accountable for it."
The man’s expression immediately darkened.
"Hexa!"
His roar echoed throughout the cavern.
The ground trembled violently.
Kyle tensed.
He could sense something moving.
Something large.
And it was approaching fast.
Instinctively, he started to rise, but before he could move or pull the jacket away from his eyes, Veronica’s voice reached him.
"Don’t worry about it."
Her tone was calm.
"Please remain seated."
"But Veronic..."
"Shhh..."
She gently caressed his cheek, her touch surprisingly soothing amid the tension.
Then she smiled.
"I’ve got this."
For a moment, the trembling earth, the poisonous atmosphere, and the approaching danger all seemed distant.
Only her quiet confidence remained.
He sighed and nodded.
Veronica studied his face for a few moments.
For an instant, she was tempted to lean forward and steal a kiss(on the cheek).
But she restrained herself.
This wasn’t the time.
Nor should she take advantage of the situation.
Slowly, she rose to her feet and turned toward the man before her, her confidence unwavering.
The rumbling beneath them continued to intensify.
Whatever had carved out this enormous cavern was returning.
And judging by the force shaking the entire area, there was little doubt that it could crush everyone present without difficulty.
Yet Veronica showed no hint of concern.
She simply raised her left hand.
"W-What are you planning?"
The assailant’s voice faltered as he noticed Spark gathering at the tip of her finger.
Veronica regarded him coldly.
"Have you never heard of a Field Collision?" she asked. "When one dimension tries to force itself into a larger one... do you know what happens?"
The man’s eyes widened.
"One... shatters."
His face immediately drained of color.
"No."
Realization struck him.
"No! You’re putting all our lives at risk!"
Panic overtook his expression.
"Stop right there, you bitch!"
He roared and lunged forward.
In his desperation, he completely forgot about his soul beast and charged Veronica himself.
But Veronica never needed time.
Not to someone at her level.
Genesis erupted outward.
The world transformed in an instant.
The assailant skidded to a halt.
His eyes widened.
The oppressive cavern vanished.
The poisonous atmosphere disappeared.
The trembling earth fell silent.
Everything around them became pristine.
Pure and untouched.
Then—
CRINKLE
The sound echoed clearly.
The man’s pupils shrank.
He watched his Field fracture before his eyes.
Not after a struggle or resistance because of opposing force.
It was simply overwhelmed.
Utterly dominated by Veronica’s Spark alone.
He staggered backward.
His eyes trembled as he took in the design of the Field surrounding them.
A Field was the true manifestation of one’s soul.
His Field embodied venom.
Poison.
Corruption.
Everything he was.
And this one...
His gaze snapped toward Veronica.
"You perverted bitch!" he shouted. "How can your soul revolve around a living person?!"
The question wasn’t unreasonable.
Everywhere he looked stood enormous bronze idols.
And every single one bore the likeness of the same man.
Veronica grinned.
A faint flush spread across her cheeks, and her breathing grew uneven.
"You wouldn’t understand."
She clasped her hands against her chest before lifting her eyes toward the figure that dominated her soul.
The assailant let out a mocking snicker.
His blade flickered into existence in his hand.
If he was going down, he intended to leave behind as much damage as possible.
’I will fucking...’
THUMP
The thought never finished.
One of the colossal bronze idols moved.
Its foot descended without warning.
The man didn’t even have time to react.
A deafening impact shook the ground.
His body vanished beneath the astronomical weight of the statue, flattened so completely that there was no struggle or scream, let alone any resistance.
Blood and shattered remains burst outward across the pristine ground.
For a moment, silence followed.
Then Veronica casually looked away, as if nothing particularly noteworthy had happened.
’Sad, I couldn’t extract any information from him.’ her eyes then landed on Kyle, ’...but well, as long as you are safe, nothing else matters.’
